What is the importance of the fresh air ductwork on the alternator of
a type 44 turbo (87 5kcstq)? Has anyone run without the ductwork for
any length of time?
The reason I ask is that my alternator no longer has this ductwork and
I'd like to know if this is going to be a problem. It would appear
the purpose of the duct is to jeep the turbo, which is just inches
away, from roasting the alternator.
The reason for removal is that this car has european bumpers which do
not accomodate the US style ductwork with the air intake mounted
behind the bumper. With the euro bumpers the only thing remaining of
that air duct is the scoop down low on the alternator which then
functions as an intake for road salt, leaves, etc, eventually causing
the alternator to quit working.
