Urgent: shifter question

Folks,

I inspected shifter for loose parts while I have nice access to it
(rack is removed, head and maniforlds also removed).   Rubber bushing is
not loose on the ball but ball itself is loose in the shaft lever.  It
has discent play.  Should it be there?   Do I need to buy new lever from
dealer?  I am threatened by community trust to tow my 200tqa if I don't
drive it.  I need to move fast!  Oh  I work on parking lot.
