20 valve turbo coolant loss - the pressure, the pressure

Is it that hard to check the compression?

Oops, Kneale is right. If the head gasket is bad, the system will be
seeing an increase in pressure. I would expect the same if the head was
cracked.

Fill the sucker up and drive it until hot, then look carefully at
everything. I'd also check the pressure again, just in case. The problem
you describe fits a bad head gasket EXCEPT for the pressure issue.
