You can take the entire assembly out of the door in one piece.  The
regulator ass'y (the grey metal frame) is bolted to the door frame (body
color, of course!) with 4 bolts, and they are usually shimmed in some manner
by the factory to make the window seal tightly against the weatherstripping.
Try to make note of how the shims are arranged.  It will make your life
easier in the end trying to get it back together snug.  I know there was at
least one person that fixed or replaced only the cable on the 20v.org lists,
but I'm not sure how long ago it was and if that is available on the
archives or not.  I personally got fed up with the crappy plastic pulleys
that dry out over time and crumble.  I'd bet that's probably where your
problem lies, and fixing the cable will only solve half of it.  I've lived
with my windows in the "up" position now for going on 5 years......the
regulators are very, very costly, and even rebuilt ones from mountain
automotive (if they're even still doing it) were not cheap.
