need help with cooling system, and OH MY GOD

Ok, update:
Took the thermostat out in the hope it had jammed.
2 mile round trip the car lost 1.5 litres of water, through overpressure in
the header tank.
I suspect I have warped the head due to me stupidly running low on water.
And as I have a spare engine, I figure its just as easy to change the whole
engine rather than just the head.
Any btdts for changing an engine on typ 89's?
