I would recommend making your remounting brackets before you actually
cut the front off.  I used some cheap aluminum C-channel from a home
improvement store.  It is designed to go on the edge of 5/8" plywood and
it fit perfect.  It is also a little more rigid than using a flat
plate.  I don't know if you will be able to find something similar. 
Once I had the mounting holes drilled in the car with corresponding
holes in the brackets I made the cuts.

Just think how easy a timing belt change will be in the future...
