type-44: tach problems

Hey all, my tach isn't registering, and I'm wondering if anyone knew how to tell if the problem is the tach itself or the signal is just not being sent to the tach? I'm sure I could trace the tach wire to the ECU, but I'm not sure what to look for on this line. I'm also not sure how the tach signal is generated in the ECU. Is it dependent on the distributor at all, or is it just directly processed from the rpm/timing sensor signals? I'd really appreciate any tidbits of info, BTDT's... Thanks.
