To do it right you've got to swap the entire fuel system (tank, pumps, filters) etc. The diesel cars use different fuel and emissions controls, and the diesel pump nozzle will not fit in the hole in an unleaded fuel filler. You also may find that the gear ratios in your transmission aren't best suited for a diesel engine.

The TDI in my jetta is happiest between 1900 and 2800 rpm, which is where it's making it's 180 ft pounds of torque.

There is a gentleman in Las Vegas that is selling new TDI engine for almost 5 grand.

At that cost, you will have to drive a hell of alot of miles to realize the fuel savings.
