Wheel bearing circlips?

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, but asking anyway. 

The machine shop that pressed in my bearings & hubs failed to install the outer circlip (nice) which is now, obviously, inaccessible.

To me, it seems that if the big nut ever came loose, I could lose the hub/wheel.  It's not there just for show & good feelings, right?  On the other hand, I can't imagine the circlip actually holding the hub/wheel on under any kind of load anyway.   

So before I make yet another trip, I'm looking for someone to validate that I do indeed have to go back, get the hubs pressed out, and install the clips lest I end up in a ditch somewhere.
