Dave,

You have a cracked firewall. When you press on the clutch, the firewall is 
flexing and has probably developed a crack. With a second person in the car 
cycling the clutch pedal, take a look and you'll see what I'm talking about. This 
is a common problem with the UrQuattro, 4000, and Coupe/GT.

There are a few ways to repair this problem. One way is to weld the crack. 
This will hold for a while, but will again fail in the future. I would weld the 
crack and then install a doubler with a piece of firewall from a donor car. I 
have seen a special bracket that someone on the list has made, that ties into 
the bolts for the steering rack. It looks like a nice design.
