I'm contemplating doing a retrograde wheel conversion in an '86 CGT. This is mainly because I have a CGT with some not so good looking wheels that are 4X108, and the normally worn suspension for a car having around 120k miles. I just parted out an '84 CGT with tons of new parts in the suspension pieces in question.
>From the '84 CGT, I have a set of brand new looking 4X100 wheels with new tires, and the strut assemblies have new bearings, new struts, new brake hardware, and the control arms have new Delrin bushings, along with new axles and CV joints. This is all off the rust free car that I was selling, but no one wanted, and I may be able to put these to good use rather than selling the stuff.
Since I need to get the '86 through inspection for the buyer, I figure it would be as easy for me to do the retro conversion than to replace the shot struts, and re-install the existing assemblies. The rear trailing arm assembly is pretty painless too with many new components there too. Essentially the car will have a lot of new stuff I would not do otherwise, since technically all it need are struts and maybe brake pads.
So, is there really any downside to doing this conversion? The car will look much better with the new wheels, and I have no intention of doing all the work that was done to the '84 CGT suspension.
Ben
