how to determine hose sizes??

Hose size is usually talked about in ID inches. You won't find many places that stock metric hose; even the dealer here in CT only has 2 different rolls of vac. hose...nothing over 3-4mm. So you'd have to special order the hose from Audi, wait, and pay big buck$$. I think one of the vac hoses I asked about was like $5 a foot, which is totally BS. I wouldn't waste time/$$ on an online store either. I found after replacing almost all of the hoses on my car that there's not really any difference between metric and US sizes. They're not exact matches, but it doesn't matter since the hose will be clamped anyway. I replaced the same hose you mentioned and the one I found was pretty much exactly a perfect fit. I wrote about this in an earlier post which I copied below:

The return hose to the reservoir is easy and cheap to replace. You need about 2' of either 5/16" or 1/4" hose.. I forget what I used (I think it was 5/16"). Any hose will do since this is a return line, not high pressure. Fuel hose is fine. I was able to dig through the junk bin at the FLAPS and found exactly what I needed so that one was free...it was only worth like $1 something to them anyway if it came off the spool.

good luck.

Just a quick question---------When one talks about hose sizes----is the
measure the inside diameter of the hose in question. And secondly, am
considering the replacement of the non pressure hose going from the
reservoir to the brake pressure accumulator and was wondering how one knows
what hose size to order up---are these hose sizes known at the dealers
parts catalog??? Or do you just have to measure them once you have the
hose to measure???? Noticed a place called mdmetric.com that has all kinds
of hoses and thought about ordering some hoses from them.
