Hi Peter,
I am cetainly not an expert on the UrQ ('83/84 Audi Quattro Coupe), so I'm going to carbon the q-list on this. I am pretty good with Coupe GTs, especially the 1987 CGT 2.3 (which is what I own). If you aren't on the q-list, I'd really suggest joining. Another site to check out is AudiWorld and Fourtitude.com. The knowledge levels are overall much higher on the q-list. It's sort of like q-list = PhD in Audi and the others are a BS.
I too am looking into buying a UrQ so I have done some research. Lots of people will say things that will scare you away from owning a UrQ, but they areally aren't much harder to keep up than any older German car. There are some parts that are NLA and some others are getting hard to find, so some creaztivity may be needed. But as far as low reliability goes, this is a mis-conception that scares away many would-be urq owners.
With the numbers of urq's in the US limited there has been more attention to bring these cars back up to specs.
If you get a later model ('84, '85)with the newer, much up rated electrical system, these cars are no less reliable, and no harder to maintain than any other older Audi.
Just some extra parts, that's all.
Look at how many 5KQT's there were in the US....same situation build wise.
A decent project car, requiring some paint, parts from any coupe, and some tlc easily sells for 5-7 grand. Hoep this helps...
