Thinking back on all the rotary conversions I've seen over the years,
indeed they seem to be overwhelmingly placed in cars that had good body
lines, mostly sporty, but with anemic or unreliable engines. The
rotaries can pretty much be stuffed into anything, but really only make
sense if the original power plant was unreliable, a dog, or impossible to
find parts for. If you look at the Opel GT in the third row at:

clean a rotary install in a small car can be.

A 20VT or 10VT Audi I5 seems a much easier conversion, with many a plug
and play component. With the experience of those listers that have done
these conversions available, it seems to me, that unless you're a bit on
the masochistic side or want something really unique, converting to a
rotary doesn't make much sense. But hey, if it rocks your boat, in my
misspent youth I once put a big ole 'merican V8 into a 115 body Mercyless
Benz just because everyone said it couldn't be done.

I've never seen a Delorean equipped with a rotary, but it has always
stuck me as the perfect candidate, a unique car with a ill conceived
running gear.

These posts always get me waxing nostalgic for my ole Mazda RX2, used to
get 200 miles to the gallon...gallon of motor oil that is.
