VAG oil sludge problems

Well, I can understand your point, Jon - I'm an M1, frequent-oil-and-filter-changer too - but at the same time, I can just imagine the hassle involved in trying to get a replacement engine installed under this warranty... I expect that the burden of proof will be on the owner, not VAG.... It does, after all, pretty clearly state in the letter that you have to have followed the factory maintenance regimen.  So, I would rather not have to take advantage of this additional warranty and the potential headaches involved.... 
 
I'll be interested in seeing whether the oil change schedule for the 1.8T engines is changed (i.e., 5k intervals vs 10k). They have already gone to a larger oil filter in mid-2004, and this is what I was given yesterday when I purchased an OEM filter for my 10k change (for my 'small' oil filter 2004). I have also heard that dealers are now using synthetic oil only in the free scheduled maintenance changes but didn't ask at my dealer yesterday...
