Huw, you read my mind.  In my initial reply to this I stated the 4k was
probably one of the most reliable Audis, and I started to type up a
paragraph about how much I loved my previous '80 5000 which was equally
reliable, but then thought better of it as I don't think a Type 43 is
"practical" for other reasons (namely that they're very hard to find
anymore and parts availability is dwindling everyday, plus it's VERY
hard to find any that are in even "fair" condition).  But if one looks
close you'll find many similarities between the old 5k's and newer 4k's,
particularly in the four door models.

As far most reliable Audi?  I'd say, '83 5000 or '87 4000/Coupe.
