CK - it's really easy to access the turbo when you pull the head (the
downpipe, wastegate, turbo, etc will be out in the open then, along w/ the
head). Might be something to consider. If you don't remove the head, you can
remove the alternator to gain more room and better access the turbo
plumbing. What about your timing belt? How long has it been since that was
changed? Wise maybe to do it and the waterpump too if the miles are unknown.
It's an easier job than you might think. I just replaced all that stuff, and
the turbo, and had a valve job done for my'87 avant. The car was chipped by
a prior owner, but now it really rocks. The work made a big difference.

I tend to utilize local junkyards in Colo. a lot (it's Audi country) for my
parts, but other listers can steer you towards internet/mail order part
sources for this stuff. Chris Semple (SP?) at - I think - Force 5 auto has
garnered accolades from listers in the past.

Obviously, check audifans.com for parts. I think there's a 5000 avant that's
getting parted by someone right now.
