SMOGII check is killing me!

Boy, I hear ya Tony!
Fortunately #2 passed without much fanfare ... but then its only been a year
or so since I put in the "new" engine. I've been struggling with #344 for a
while now ... I'm about to go in for round 3. My situation is nowhere near
as serious as yours ... the car passes everything at idle, but fails HC at
speed, barely over the range. I'm convinced that this is due in part to the
"smog pro's" inability to maintain a stable 2500RPM ...
I haven't had to deal with the dynos ... fortunately Mr. Nas now has the
only 2WD car that was in the inventory. I've watched them test other
cars... talk about very scary ... anyways ... I wonder if the problem isn't
due to the fact that they can't handle a manual tranny ... have you watched
while they perform the test? Have you tried a smog test place that knows
Audis?
Personally, I disagree with the statement that a new cat won't help ...
perhaps you can even get a new one that has a larger cat than stock. If you
can figure out how to handle the air injection, I understand that the 3-way
cats are made primarily to help out with NOx.
Good luck Tony!

With all the little red paper tags I'm seeing in rear windows around here, I
suspect that you have a lot of company! It is so bad I'm starting to wonder
if the auto manufacturers didn't push for the Smog Check II to help out with
new car sales!
