I very much doubt that Audi make any gearboxes. It wouldn't surprise me if even the new CVT
was made under license by ZF.
There are several ZFs, BTW. I don't actually know if it's all one company with several
plants, or whether there are several companies with the same name. That happened after WWII -
Carl Zeiss was headquartered in Jena, for example (East Germany) but the plants in the West
were allowed to use the name without restrictions. Same goes for Thüringer Wurst.
There is a wonderful book - as rare as rocking horse droppings - called the "Damage Number
Catalogue". It's used by main franchises during warranty processing, and it gives the
original manufacturer for most VAG parts. It's amazing how little of the ur-quattro was
actually manufactured by Audi.
