The new "Unintended Acceleration"....?

Many people use the wrong battery configuration to save some money. Note to
all type44 owners, battery must have protective insulator cap over
terminals and external venting tube. Also, the hold-down must be properly
installed.

The fire probably took out the lock vacuum pump.
Besides, as much as I hate the vacuum locks, why couldn't he have just
pulled the stalk up with his fingers and opened the door?
Sounds more like he panic-ed maybe overcame by smoke and passed out.

Having a battery installed under the backseat is no defect, otherwise,
there would be hundreds of thousands of charred VW/Audis. I like the fact
that my battery is under my backseat. It's location makes wiring to the
trunk a breeze, car handles better, and protects the battery from the elements.

But in litigation crazed America, lawyers will have a field day. If they
want to talk defects, how about our legal system?
