I've been told by a Chemistry Professor of mine that the
chemicals used as propellents for airbags, in their un-fired
form are considered hazardous waste, even if separated into
separate containers (apparently one of the constituents is quite
toxic). However, once the bag is fired, the by product is chemically
inert, i.e. harmless. So, one of his students (has many returning adults,
in a Community College), whom works at a dealership volunteers that
at least her dealership (and she knows of others), in an attempt to lower
their hazardous waste disposal fees (yeah. right), instructs their
employees
to fire off disposed airbags in the manner you've described, thus
allowing them
to be disposed of in the ordinary trash. It doesn't hurt that everytime
they do this,
the entire dealership wanders out back to enjoy the "show".
