just to throw it out there in the mix there was a recall on 99
golf/jetta/beetle as far as i know. i had to deal with this on my moms 99
golf that she had since new but never received a recall letter in the
mail nor did the dealer alter her that it hadn't been performed and she
visited them often :(. anyhow the recall was to reflash the ecu program
as there was a problem in the programming from the factory. we also had
both oxygen sensors replaced under the recall, not sure if they normally
do that. the drive ability problems didn't start until about 80,000
miles.

these cars are OBD II so that second oxygen sensor is there almost solely
to measure whether the cat is functioning properly. if you have vag-com
it should tell you if the second sensor is working right. it can also be
back probed and measured with a multimeter. i wanted my moms cat check
due to the problems we were having and they assured me that it was okay
since the second sensor was reporting good numbers using vag-com. i was
unwilling to accept just vag-com so i had them test it with one of the old
stand alone emissions machines. there was only one guy left in the shop
that knew how to run it as they never use it. they only use vag-com to
diagnose bad cats. anyhow it passed the second test also. right now the
car has 98,000 miles on it and is still working well.

also shortly before that problem we had to have the MAF replace i would
look in that as a possible problem also.
