They should be shielded, but if it was me I would repair it. Now in
my area we have exactly zero older VAG product in local junk yards so
that kind of tips the scales towards repair.
Just be sure to minimize the area that is left unshielded after the
repair and use good heat shrink over the joint. I personally would
not be too worried about it for two reasons. First the connectors
they use on the back of the block are not shielded and second they are
not shielded for the last 6 inches or so at the ECU. You primary
concern I believe is ignition interferance. You might get a piece of
flat braided grounding wire. Many of these wires are actually hollow
tubes. You could fabricate a shield in this method, but be sure you
find a way to ground it or it will not do much good.
