a) Pull a spark plug wire, insert a spare spark plug into it,
    hold the plug to ground, and crank.

b) buy a cheap (~US$5) spark plug tester.  It has a spark plug
    terminal on one end, an alligator clip on the other, and
    between them a pointed bolt in a plastic case that can be
    adjusted for gap. Use in place of the spare plug, as in a).
