Well, it certainly would have loaded the circuit it was added to (the 
left tail light) with the short circuit in the old wiring.  While it is 
probably very difficult to show whether or not that made the smoke come 
out of your cluster, what they did certainly falls under the heading of 
"kludge."  Why didn't they just find the short and fix it?
