The cam position sensor, mounted on the back end of the drivers-side cam, not especially
expensive, has been known to cause a no-start on the V6-12V. I remember a flood of these on
this list a few years ago, or maybe on the 12V list (That would make more sence I guess).
The intermittent symptom even matches up.
