Taka was right (was ATF in PS rack on 4K series)

Goo2000 did not come into play until the the 5k series
type 44 models. It had to do with the hydraulic power
brakes. ATF was not suitable for that part of the
application, thus, the green gooey stuff became the
product for the PS/PB application.
So V-A-G just standardized on the stuff all the way
'round, so it seems. I had 2 A2 VW Jettas. The '86
was spec'd for ATF in the PS application, but by the
'91, it was the green gold product. I also had an '84
Quantum and it was spec'd for ATF. Note that these 3
VW cars had conventional (vaccuum assist) power brake
systems.
Best thing to do if you're unsure is to get out the
owners manual or look closely at the PS resivoir to
see what it says. But I'll bet your car is old enough
for ATF. Cheaper too.
