Dave,
The diagram on 20v.org is correct, and the procedure is described in detail
in the Bentley Manual regarding checking the codes and going through the
diagnostic checks to reset the codes.
If you have a bulb in the CE light socket, all you really need is 2 lengths
of wire, maybe 3 feet each, and you can sit in the driver's seat comfortably
and pull the codes, and also do diagnostics.
My guess is your distributor gear is now shrapnel, that's assuming it's the
original plastic gear, but the codes should reveal what's going on.
You might pose your question to the list @ 20v.org and see what the
collective wisdom there might reveal.
