The front rotors on my 5ktq are toast...

Anybody have a recommendation on where to get inexpensive replacements?
Cheapest I've found locally are about $80.00 per rotor.

Thanks!

... sorry to hear about your experience ... interestingly, I just shipped a
set of wheels to another lister via FedEx Ground ... *world's* cheaper than
"Brown" ... or anyone else I checked. I had boxed the wheels in two
separate boxes. I had some problems getting the wheels to the FedEx store
(not their fault of course), but once there they made it to the person I'd
sold the wheels to in the time frame that was quoted. Word was that the
wheels made it in fine shape ...

My son was working on his 5ktq this afternoon, replacing the ignition
switch,
and after putting the steering wheel back on we noticed that the horn didn't
work any more. A check of the steering wheel shows that the steering wheel
is
not seated on the steering shaft as deeply as it was before. We tried
pushing
it on as hard as we can and we've torqued the nut on pretty tight, but the
steering wheel is still about a quarter inch further out then it was before.
Is there some trick to getting the steering wheel seated all the way down on
the shaft, like a specific torque setting, or a big rubber maller?

Before I even get into the manual, looking for some BTDT if it's out
there. Freon was a little low in the 1990 200TQA, vacuumed the system,
checked for leaks, and refilled with R12. Temperature at center vent a
cool 40 degrees F. Pretty good considering it's almost a buck outside
with ridiculous humidity. So far so good...until I drove the car.

While driving, upon acceleration the air out of the vents gets diverted,
or blocked, can't really tell. I just know it disappears. Compressor
still on, evaporator still cold etc. No air out vents on deceleration or
cruising. The only way to get it back is to switch the CC to "econ", on
Econ the air starts coming out the vents again, switch to "auto" and the
AC blows out the vents normally, UNTIL I accelerate and the whole thing
starts over again.

Bentley Page 87.27 and 87.28 show A/C vent flap controls. They operate on
a vacuum. Maybe you're losing vacuum under acceleration????? Then the
15-year-old vacuum motors don't get back to their original settings after
you slow????

You shouldn't have to use any undue force to get the steering wheel to
seat properly. Remove the nut and wheel, make sure that the horn contact
is properly installed on the wheel, and then reinstall the wheel gently,
aligning the wheel to the splines on the shaft. The 24mm nut should be
torqued down to 30 ft-lbs.

Hi Fay,

There is a Eurovan advertised on CraigsList right now;
http://sacramento.craigslist.org/car/86520040.html

Maybe it isn't sold yet.

Cheers

Fay,

There are two different versions. The early ones had the 2.5L 5 cylinder.
The later ones had a detuned VR6 in them. The VR6 is quite a bit more peppy,
but also more expensive and harder to work on. The 2.5 is a non-turbo
version of the 5-cyl in your 200. They all had Automatics. really a pretty
trouble-free drivetrain, as long as it is maintained. As for the rest of it,
as Kent said, you already have a VAG product, so you know what to expect.

I have seen a LOT of EuroVans on the web for about $2K.

I know there have been some posts about them, but would someone please
refresh my memory as to the years to stay away from?

Also, what will I have to pay for one which is in DEPENDABLE shape?

. . . . I know, HOW HIGH IS UP !

I have money set aside for a car and am also looking at horses.

I hope I don't end up riding my horse to the real estate office, LOL.

I have a pair of new brake rotors that were given to me by a friend who
picked them up on ebay. They are allegedly for an Audi but not one that
either of us owns. Beck Arnley number is 083-2747. Does anybody have a
way of looking these up to see what they fit? I would like to find a home
for them but I need to figure out what they are.

Doing the TB, everything came apart OK without too much cussing except some
of the torx screws on the water pump. Two broke off, one is stripped.

I plan to hammer (ouch!) something into the stripped one and see if I can
persuade it to come out with a hand impact driver. Any suggestions on
removing the broken studs after the water pump is out?

Timing belt on a V8 is orders of magnitude more complex than on an I5 - and
it isn't fun in the heat of the summer, either.

They're out.

For the stripped one, I carefully centerpunched it, and drilled
progressively larger until I was able to tap the head off the fastener.
This let me remove the water pump, leaving the three bad studs protruding.

A vice grip on the remains of the drilled one took it right out. Note that
I did not have to or want to drill all the way through.

#2 also came right out - vice grip, plus a little back and forth, and it
loosened right up and came out.

#3 was tougher. It did NOT want to loosen with the vice grips. Fortunately,
the aluminum block casting in the area was fairly thin, so I applied heat
with a bernz-o-matic, being careful not to melt any of the plastic bits in
the area.

Two or three tries with that broke the stud loose, and patience was
rewarded when it came out intact.

Now I can start putting this thing back together!!!!
