Door trim goop

Hey, I'm replacing the rusted out driver's door on my '87 5k:

The trim piece on the door has this black goop on it that presumably seals out 
the moisture.  Is there someplace I can get this stuff?  What is it?  Is there 
a better way to seal the door trim?  There were a couple of places where I 
could poke a finger through, not to mention it totally looks like hell.  Time 
to remedy that situation...
