Yep, it was the fuel pump. I could hear the pump running so I assumed it was OK and wasted a lot of time troubleshooting the ignition system. The pump was allegedly replaced about 3 years ago by a German mechanic in Arvada, CO (name of shop upon request). I took the car to him with a rough idle. He said he replaced the pump because it was leaking. I thought this a bit odd because I had not noticed it leaking and it seemed that the new pump was just as noisy as the old one. Sure enough, when I removed the old pump, it had been wiped clean so it was nice and shiny black except on top around the mounting bracket where there was 15 years of accumulated grunge. I doubt that I can find the receipt so probably won't get any money out of him but I am going to file a complaint with the BBB anyhow. I am going to resist the urge to wipe the pump clean of fingerprints and chuck it through his front window, although he has probably done this often enough that he wouldn't have a clue which one of his customers it was.
