wheel bearings - "hub shark"

I am a person who does many things not out of neccessity and often not even
because I can do it better than someone else.

I often do things because I think "I bet I can make one of those" - IOW, I
do many things because I can. Basically the same reason that people climb
mountains without the risk of altitude sickness.

If you have access to a basic machine shop, some aluminum round stock, a
big pipe coupler and some big threaded rod you can make your own puller.
Mine was assembled from what were basically scraps of material. I did buy
the big threaded rod and the big pipe coupler from somewhere - likely Rural
King or maybe a local industrial supply house. The threads on the inside of
the big pipe coupler were removed using a lathe to give ID clearance for
the wheel bearing.

See my home made bearing puller at:

It has worked on 5 bearings to date.

It is a bit more complicated than my $10 Audi 5-cylinder crank locking
tool:

I have also used the Schley bearing puller in the past and if you have
access to one of those they also work well. Make sure you have the right
diameter disks whatever you use.

And you must press on the outer race of the bearing during bearing
installation. Otherwise you will damage or destroy the bearing. And when
you press the hub back into the center you should support the center of the
bearing to prevent damage to the bearing.

HTH,
Eric
