The "100" nomenclature was used on multiple generations of cars.
In the US, the first was the 100LS from the early 70s, but I don't think
that's what you're thinking about. The two generation of 5000 models
we had were also named 100 and 200 in the rest of the world. In 1988
Audi unified the model names, and renamed the 5000 back to 100/200,
and up through the 1991 model year the 5000/100/200 cars are based on the
type 44 (C3) platform. For 1992 the 100 name continues on the type 4A (C4)
platform, and then for 1995 the name was changed again to the A6, but the
platform remains type 4A until the 1988 model year when the platform
was changed to type 4B (C5).

The 1992-1994 100 and the 1995-1997 A6 are mostly the same, but during
the name change there were also some changes to the bumpers, lights,
hood, and other minor details. All US C4 platform cars came with
the 2.8 V6 12V engine except the 1992-1994 S4 and 1995 S6, which
have the 2.3 turbo I5 20V.
