Well, I wouldn't say "completely different".
Usually the letter suffix (on all VAG parts) indicate a different part
that serves the same function (not in a substitutable fashion, of course).
For instance, below, the 951 253 relay is almost certainly just a simple
switch of some sort. The 955 532 is most likely an afterrun relay of
some sort, the 927 351 a mystery to me (all I have is one 927 xxx that
is an ABS relay), as is the 959 663.
Why am I ignoring the first three digits? Because all they usually mean
is the platform the part was developed for and (I think) the repair
group. Ti knows this better than I, I'm sure.
Anyway, a couple of reasons for the gaps in the list I made are 1. I
very rarely get useful data to add from other folks, and 2. to a lesser
extent, I haven't spent much time taking the "bigger" (or later...) cars
apart. Hence lots of type 85/89 specific doohickeys.
