Evan,
In this pic I can see a red jumper wire.  I think it is for Relay #8 which
Audi calls "Starter lockout AT - relay".  This is for the AntiTheft
system, aka burglar alarm.  The jumper wire bypasses the alarm system
which is a good thing.  As these cars age the alarm system can go haywire
and intermittently disable the starter.  If this is what the red jumper is
for then you'd be well advised to leave it in place.
It looks like a nice car ... good luck with it.
