Helping Hands   www.helpinghandsofamerica.org  is a fundraiser that accepts
cars as charitable donations and then sells them. They do not trouble
themselves with  repairs, so Audis go very cheaply. Here is a list of prices I have
paid '82 CGT, $150.00, '90Q 20V $100.00 (thunk in rear turned out to be rear
transmission mount). Years ago, '90 100, $300 (wouldn't run, driver's door
ignition kill), '87 5KTQ, $400.00 (nothing wrong that I can recall). Other cars I
have bought there, '66 Pontiac Bonneville convert., $800.00. '89 Plymouth turbo
minivan, $100.00 (exhaust leak, they thought it was an engine knock), '68 Dodge
Charger, 440, 4 speed, in need of full resto, $1800.00.

Prices have been going up for two reasons, intense scrutiny by the AG and a
change in the tax law. Previously, anyone donating a car could take a deduction
for full market value regardless of the vehicles condition or mileage (this
not legal but taxing authorities weren't interested in chasing down each car).
Now, taxpayer's are only allowed to deduct amount actually received. Helping
Hands now has to send donator a statement of sum actually received.

All is not roses. People park at the entrance and grab the really hot models
that come in. I am relatively sure that "the fix is in" and that dealers
receive a call f something really hot comes in.

Last time I was there, they had a '56 Olds coupe, $500.00 and an early 928
with the engine apart $500.00. Audis linger there and you can almost name your
own price. I have bought some just for the tires. I pay $100.00 for the car and
have the junkyard across the street drag it over. I get the wheels and tires
and they get the "weight". My current "carry all" is a '90 Olds Silhouette
that I bought there for $100.00, it had failed inspection because of a rust
frozen emergency brake cable. Otherwise a nice car with terrific A/C.
