door lock solenoids

Nick,
I have a Bulldog Security remote unlock setup installed in my '87 5ktq - I
bought it from Wallymart for around C$40 or so. You can install it by
working entirely under the rear seat - tapping into the wires going to the
remote unlock pump, battery, ground and the parking lights (if you want them
to flash). IIRC the system in the Type 44 reverses polarity on the wires
going to the pump - one polarity for lock and the other for unlock. The
unit actuates the pump depending on the button pressed - the trick is that
for a pneumatic system, like the one in Audis and Mercs, the control pulse
must be for 2.5 seconds (the instructions tell you how to program the
remote) - enough to make the pump raise the driver's or passenger's lock
button - from that point on, the system works normally - the button is up,
so the pump opens all the locks. Tapping into the system is not a problem -
the wiring diagram is quite well laid out - I had a harder time wiring in
the relays to make the parking lights flash. I made a wiring harness for
that, but you have to use 2 relays (or a double output single relay) to make
the parking lights flash on both sides as they are independent circuits
(apparently there is a L/R switch on European cars.....I learned that on our
last local Audi group pub night).
Princess Auto in Canada - www.princessauto.ca - had a similar remote system
"Wireless Remote Kit" pn#8003441 for C$29.99 last month.
