Code Readers

Can anyone out there give me any advice on code readers?  I have a 95 S6 and
a 94 100 CS wagon, and some late model Genl Motors products.  I would
preferably like to find a code reader that would do all vehicles, I do
realize there is a difference between OBD I & II , but if anyone has any
input, I'd love to hear it.  I have looked at Autotap
http://www.autotap.com/autotap_for_windows.html  which looks pretty
comprehensive & cool, but it needs to be used on a laptop, which is not a
problem, but I'm thinking that having to hook up a laptop to use the reader
might be pretty cumbersome.  Thanks for any opinions you may have!
