Of course there is risk, but that's why you use a very small vacuum hose. Either that or remove your air filter and use one of those "misting" nozels on a hose and just squirt the mist into the intake. Either way, the key is high RPM and a hot engine so it vaporizes the water before the compression stroke. I've done this on all kinds of gunked up engines, from old Chevy small blocks, to my old Fiat X1/9 to my Audi NG...all were fine, actually better, after the cleaning...
