Good news! I found it. It's back behind the inner CV on the driver's
side, and a tranny mount is in the way of removing it easily. I checked
the fluid level, and it was a cup low, so I filled it up.

The reason I was checking it was I was getting a growling noise from the
front end that disappeared on right turns. So my next culprit was the
right front wheel bearing. I had already ordered one in anticipation of
this being the problem, and once I got it apart it was sure enough the
growler.

I am in the same boat as the previous poster about the tie rod end boot, I
put a small tear in mine while disassembling the front end, as well as a
big one in the ball joint. Any chance of getting a replacement boot for
either one of these? I also discovered why my antilock brake light was on
(crap in the teeth of the sensor ring, and metal shavings on the sensor
itself) and why the autocheck light was on for the brakes (improper
installation of brake pad sensor led to premature failure.)
