How many miles might the CV joint have served?

When my old 1987 VW GTI 16V broke its left-front CV joint, the cage inside
basically had worn completely through. That car had 220,000 miles on it at
the time, and it may have been the original CV joint. I wonder if the
occasional introduction of fresh grease would have granted it more life.

If you can, save the old broken parts from your car and snap some
digi-photos to share.
