If he was pumping the gas pedal before engaging the starter, it
doesn't do anything. Unlike a carburetted car, the pedal is
only connected to a throttle butterfly, so pumping it means
opening and closing the throttle with absolutely no effect
on anything else.
Now, if he was pumping while cranking, then it *might* make a difference,
By modulating the throttle he was also causing a turbulence in the intake
air, which is sensed by the MAF and modulating the amount of fuel being
injected. At any rate something is definitely not right if he has to do
that in order to start the car.
