Hi John, assuming we're past the basics of tbelts and fuel washdown, the
only really strange one I've seen was a customers 3.6L that was parked warm
and then wouldn't restart when cooled off the next morning. Towed in,
sounded weak, tested compression and got nearly zip in a couple cylinders on
one bank.(best recollection on my part since this was a couple years ago).
Car had 150k on it or so. We feared the worst, prepped him for a decent
expense, and pulled the heads. No visual damage to be found, just a generous
carbon buildup. The chunks were actually holding the valves open enough to
kill the compression. Never seen such a thing in the Vw world. Cleaned the
heads, did some basic "while you're there" work and reinstalled. Compression
test confirmed back to spec and ran well. We advised him to use some premium
fuel, Techron, and leave it in 3rd more often :)
