You can (and at least 2 V8Q listers I know of have) used GM top end
cleaner on a non-starting engine.  Remove the plugs and pour a little
into each cylinder.  It's also available as an aerosol now.  Stuff cuts
right through the carbon build up.  Crank a few times sans plugs before
replacing them.  Won't be a mosquito or fruit fly for miles around after
she starts up.....
