It appears to be (as you point out) lighter than the B6 S4... But perhaps
only in euro trim. USA spec b6 to euro spec b7 isn't necessarily a fair
comparison. Let's see what the real us weight is (im assuming that the
article only talks about euro trim..)
In any case, at least paying lip service to lowering weight is an
appreciated move in the right direction :)
The impressive thing in my mind is the maximum revs of the motor. Audi
seems to have about faced on its boat-anchor uninteresting torquey motor
philosophy.. Any 8000rpm NA V8 is automatically interesting. It's
interesting that they picked 8250.. That's nearly exactly (exactly?) the M5
V10 limit. 8000 or 8500 is a rounder number, so I wonder if it wasn't
intentional paper warfare.
As for your E60 M5 speculations.. It will almost certainly be lighter than
the M5. I doubt the gas mileage will be astonishingly different. I don't
see how "FSI" can be compared to a specific engine when FSI is an aspect of
engine design. I.e. "I wonder if diesel will prove to be more reliable than
the LS-6". What sense does that make? :)
As far as M5 powerplant reliability and computer reliance....anyone in the
audi glass house throwing stones at BMW's glass house is still living in a
glass house :)

Ah, yes...but you get more pounds for your dollar, I think. What's this new
model weigh, 3700-3800? The V8 S4 is around 4000...
Will it come to the states with a manual? Europe only for the first year or
so? It'll probably have much better mileage than the M5, but is it lighter?
Will FSI prove more reliable than the M5's V10 which gives new definition to
the word "stressed" and has more computers than a college dorm? Will it be
available with DSG? Sticker prices?
