Fwd: Driveline problems 90q

I'm not sure how long you have been a member of the list and what
problems with audis you are familiar with but all I can do is tell you
my personal experience with similar problems.

"Now I'm picking up some scary noises as well. When the
drivetrain has reverse torque, i.e. when in reverse or under engine
braking, I get a substantial 'ring' that seems to happen once every
driveshaft rotation."

it sounds like a carrier bearing gone bad, also, while you're under
the car check for any play in the fore and aft CV's. My aft drive
shaft CV had substantial play and made all kinds of noises. I have
found the universal joint located right after the carrier bearing to
commonly be in decent condition on most older audis. Def. check the
carrier though AND when was the last time you changed the tranny and
rear diff oil?..... i'd be curious to see the condition of what comes
out.

"In addition I have a new knock that
comes from the rear end at low speed, under 15 mph, again while under
engine braking like when coming to a stop. I haven't been able to
duplicate the knock by driving in reverse, and the knock only seems to show
up after driving for 15 mins or so."

2 things in my experience create this noise. 1. bad bushings on the
trailing arms - there are kits out there at reasonable prices that
will take care of the clunking rear-end.
2. not sure but I think the '89 90 also has the rear transverse link
also (like a control arm on the top side of the knuckle) I have had
these go bad on both of my 5KTQ's. If you lift the rear end and lift
up and shake the wheel up and down, you'll know if it went. you'll
get..... clunk clunk clunking.

well I hope this helps. AND I hope it isn't your actual read diff
making the noises!!
Good luck
