Strange intermittent starting problem ('95 A6 Q)

Hi Guys,
Happy New Year!
I am sorry if this has been covered before, but I cannot get to the archives
for some reason. Pointing me to the right place would be a great response.
Intermittently, when I turn the key to start the engine, nothing happens
except that the gauges go active. Most of the time there is no sound.
Sometimes, there is that high-pitched whine like the battery is almost dead.
If I turn the key on, turn the key off, turn the key on
it eventually comes
to life. Sometimes it happens if I open the hood and close it so it seems
that a little jarring helps (but it could be a spurious correlation).
Anyway, it is weird.
Does this sound at all familiar?
Best wishes to you all,
John
