Dealer says A4 needs new $1600 Ball joints every 30k?!

I had to replace two of the front control arms on our old 99.5 A4- at
the cost of around $800. The bushings wear out and the suspension
clunks. I've heard that if you let it go, it can get worse to the
point of something bad happening. This was on a 50k mile car.

We did not get a recall letter about this- I think the recall was only
for much earlier build cars.
