Bad puppy is no more

Since we are swapping fire stories, I had the fuel pump discharge tube blow
out of the fuel pump on a '63 VW Bug at 80 mph on the 401 (yes, it was WOT).
Yes, the engine did catch on fire and, as I was heading home from
University, all my worldly possessions were in the car at the time. I
extinguished the fire with one of those six-inch long 1950's carbon tet
glovebox fire extinguishers and a work sock.
I then proceeded to re-wire the engine with the spare wire and parts I had
stuffed under the hood. The OPP constable who stopped to offer assistance
was so fascinated by this he hung around until I was done and was totally
amazed when the blackened hulk of an engine fired up. I drove off leaving
him shaking his head. Ah, those were simpler days.... :0)
Mandatory Audi Content: I couldn't carry enough spare wire to re-wire the
engine in the UrS4....

I had a gas line go once on a VW Rabbit. Unfortunately, my date and I were
dressed to the nines, were out to dinner about 30 miles away from college,
and it was 10 degrees out.
We come out to the car after dinner. The car starts and almost immediately I
see steam coming from under the hood. Shut her off and find a pinhole leak
in the gas line.
No the car did not catch fire. I don't know whether it was because it was
cold or the engine was cold or I was just lucky or what.
I can't remember how we got back to school or what happened after that :)
(It *was* a *long* time ago, long enough that a first year VW Rabbit was
only a 5 year old car.)
