4000, Quattro and Coupe GT owners, rejoice!
You too can drive a (fuel) smell-free car now.

After many years of fuel smell in my car, after replacing all the rubber
lines going from and to the fuel tank, after checking the tank itself for a
pinhole leak, after replacing the o-ring that squeezes the rubber boot
around the filler neck, after checking all the grommets in the firewall and
the trunk flor, I said to myself : "it's just the natural odor of the car,
    can't do much about it".

    Wrong.

I forgot an important (but nearly invisible) part: the fuel cap gasket!
When fuel reach the end of the fill tube (during spirited driving :-)) ) it
just get past the old worn gasket and drips slowly in the trunk.

I still have the OEM locking metal gas cap, and the gasket in there was
    similar to a flat rubber washer. I ordered 811 201 557A (10$CAN) and what I
got is a dual lip molded gasket, where the cross section is a lot like a V.
No wonder why the old gasket was not fuel tight anymore.

Now Honey won't say that my car has that "special" smell...

    HTH,
